The present study examined both the relationships between home meditation practice and the mental health outcomes of the mindfulness-based emotion regulation intervention (MBERI) and the mediating role of self-compassion in the relationships. Fifty participants in the MBERI group completed several self-report inventories of self-compassion and mental health outcomes at pre-intervention and post-intervention, and a subsample of 45 participants completed the same assessment tools at 1-month follow-up. They demonstrated significant increases in self-compassion and mental well-being, as well as reductions in perceived stress and negative affect at both post-intervention and 1-month follow-up. The total practice time for all formal meditations combined was significantly correlated with long-term increase in self-compassion, and their frequency was marginally associated with long-term increases in self-compassion and mental well-being, respectively. Both the frequency and total duration of breath mindfulness practice were significantly correlated with short-term increase in self-compassion, long-term increase in mental well-being, and long-term decrease in perceived stress. The frequency of all informal meditation practices combined was significantly associated with long-term decrease in perceived stress. Moreover, short-term increase in self-compassion completely mediated the relationship between the total duration of breath mindfulness practice and long-term increase in mental well-being. In conclusion, these results provide partial support for the effects of home meditation practices on the mental health outcomes following the MBERI and suggest the mediating role of self-compassion in the effect of breath mindfulness practice.
